DEFAMATION CASE SUMMONS TO KANGANA UPHELD AS HC DISMISSES HER PETITION | 2 August, 2025

The Punjab and Haryana high court on August 1 dismissed a petition by actress-MP Kangana Ranaut challenging her 2022 summons by a Punjab court in a defamation case, saying that the complaint against her was not mala fide and that the magistrate had issued the summons after examining the material on record.

During the farmers’ stir in 2020, Kangana had misidentified activist Mohinder Kaur and had written in a post on X (then called Twitter) that protestors like her could be hired for Rs. 100. The HC said that Kangana held a “position of influence” and, what’s more, she had failed to apologise after her outrageous post.
