PLAYBACK SINGER BABLA MEHTA NO MORE | 24 July, 2025

Well-known playback singer Babla Mehta passed away on 22nd July in Bombay.

Among the films for the songs of which he had lent his voice are Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin, Chandni, Sadak, Tahalka and Major Saab.

His debut song in films — Tere mere hothon pe from Chandni, which he rendered with Lata Mangeshkar — proved to be a milestone in his career. He also composed songs, mostly non-film. The music of Wounded (2007) was scored by Babla Mehta.

Babla was a huge fan of singer Mukesh and used to render Mukesh’s songs at the hundreds of concerts he performed the world over. The uncanny resemblance of his voice to that of Mukesh earned him the sobriquet of ‘Voice of Mukesh’. He cut ten solo and six duet albums comprising cover versions of Mukesh originals for T-Series. It is a strange coincidence that Babla breathed his last on the birth anniversary of the singer he adored.

Babla was a force to reckon with in the world of devotional songs. He also composed and rendered poems of erstwhile Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
