The Supreme Court on June 9 agreed to hear on June 13 a plea challenging the Karnataka government’s ban on the screening of Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam’s Thug Life in the state. The actor-producer had, during the film’s promotion a few days prior to its release, claimed that Kannada was born out of Tamil. His comment sparked strong reactions in Karnataka.
Following the controversy and the consequent ban, the Karnataka high court suggested that Kamal Haasan issue an apology to the people of Karnataka. But Kamal refused to do so. Hence the film could not open in Karnataka last week with the rest of India.
