DC Studios, Troll Court Entertainment, The Safran Company and Domain Entertainment’s Superman (dubbed from the Hollywood film of the same name; UA) is an American superhero film based on the eponymous character from DC Comics.
Kryptonian Clark Kent (David Corenswet) gained superpowers from Earth’s yellow sun and debuted as Superman three years ago. The most powerful metahuman on Earth, he is working as a reporter for Daily Planet in Metropolis, alongside Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) and Jimmy Olsen (Skyler Gisondo). Lois is dating Clark and knows that he is Superman.
Superman stops the Boravian army from invading the neighbouring Jarhanpur. For this act of his, he is defeated — for the first time — by an armoured fighter, Hammer of Boravia. Therefore, Superman retreats to the Fortress of Solitude to heal, and is helped by his super-dog, Krypto. Billionaire Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) sends Engineer (Maria Gabriela de Faria) to trail Superman. Meanwhile, Luthor manages incriminating evidence against Superman. Now, this evidence leads to widespread distrust of people in Superman who then surrenders to free Krypto.
Luthor transports Superman to a mass prison in an artificial pocket dimension, but fellow-prisoner Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan) helps restore Superman’s powers. Now, the two free Krypto and Metamorpho’s baby son, Joey. Meanwhile, Luthor’s girlfriend, Eve Teschmacher (Sara Sampaio), infatuated with Jimmy, leaks Superman’s location to him. Lois enlists Mister Terrific’s (Edi Gathegi) help to overpower Luthor’s forces and unlock the pocket dimension to free the prisoners. Here, Boravia’s invasion of Jarhanpur begins. The Daily Planet team proves that Luthor is not merely selling arms to Boravia but also collaborating with the invasion in return for valuable Jarhanpur territory.
Superman and Mister Terrific battle Luthor’s team members and reach Luthor who is forced to confess to his crimes.
James Gunn has written an engaging story and screenplay, which have action, emotions and drama, all in abundance. There are some truly clapworthy scenes like the one in which some people of Jarhanpur raise a flag, appealing to Superman to come to their rescue. The scenes in which Superman saves lives are, of course, fantastic. The scenes of Krypto coming to Superman’s aide are also exciting and thrilling. All in all, the drama involves the viewers completely.
David Corenswet does a wonderful job in the title role. He endears himself to the audience and delivers a heartfelt performance. Rachel Brosnahan is natural and mature in the role of Lois Lane. Nicholas Hoult leaves a mark as Lex Luthor. Edi Gathegi makes his presence amply felt as Mister Terrific. Anthony Carrigan leaves a mark as Metamorpho. Nathan Fillion has his moments as Green Lantern. Isabela Merced impresses as Hawkgirl. Skyler Gisondo is endearing as Jimmy Olsen. Sara Sampaio plays Eve Teschmacher with conviction. Maria Gabriela de Faria is good as Engineer. Wendell Pierce has his moments as Perry White, editor-in-chief of Daily Planet. Pruitt Taylor Vince and Neva Howell lend fair support as Clark’s adoptive human parents, Jonathan Kent and Martha Kent. Zlatko Burić is effective as Vasil Ghurkos, president of Boravia. Terence Rosemore (as Lex Luthor’s henchman, Otis Berg) and Stephen Blackehart (as Lex Luthor’s assistant, Sydney Happersen) are alright. Frank Grillo (as A.R.G.U.S. director Rick Flag Sr.), Milly Alcock (in a cameo appearance as Superman’s cousin, Kara Zor-El), John Cena (in a cameo appearance as Christopher Smith), Sean Gunn (as tech billionaire Maxwell Lord), Bradley Cooper and Angela Sarafyan (as Superman’s Kryptonian parents, Jor-El and Lara Lor-Van), Will Reeve (in a cameo appearance as a news reporter) and the other actors provide the desired support. The dog (Krypto) is fascinating.
James Gunn’s direction is first-rate. He has made a thorough entertainer for people of all classes and age groups. John Murphy and David Fleming’s background music is terrific. Henry Braham’s cinematography is outstanding. Beth Mickle’s production designing is fantastic. Editing (by William Hoy and Craig Alpert) is razor-sharp. Dubbing is superb.
On the whole, Superman is a box-office winner which will score all over.
