A person was arrested recently for impersonating a filmmaker to establish contacts with struggling starlets. Director Sriram Raghavan had filed a complaint with the Versova (Bombay) police in March this year after learning from a woman that a person had created fake Facebook and Instagram accounts of his and was using them to interact with aspiring actresses. The woman said, she had been asked by the impersonator — a 32-year-old IT engineer — to do a nude photo shoot for a web series he offered her.
The Versova police arrested the man — Shanmugham Thangavel — from Tiruchengode in Tamil Nadu. He is in police custody. He was booked under section 419 (impersonation) of the IPC and section 66(C) (identity theft) of the Information Technology Act.
