The release of Abir Gulaal on 9th May has now been thrown into jeopardy following the recent terror attack in Jammu & Kashmir’s Pahalgam. The attack by Pakistani terrorists has reignited public anger and renewed demands for a boycott of Pakistani talent in Indian films. Abir Gulaal stars Pakistani actor Fawad Khan in the male lead with Vaani Kapoor.
Information & broadcasting ministry sources have indicated that the government may not permit the film’s release, reflecting a hardened stance amid escalating tensions. Several cinema owners have expressed reluctance to screen the film, fearing public unrest and possible protests.
A Fawad Khan starrer, Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, had faced a similar protest before its release in 2016, after the Uri attack. Johar had then issued a public aplology and committed to refraining from casting Pakistani actors.
