‘HUM TUMHEIN CHAHTE HAIN’ REVIEW | 13 October, 2023

SRG Films International’s Hum Tumhein Chahte Hain (UA) is a love triangle.

Maya (Rituparna Sengupta) is a divorcee who falls in love with Surya (Janmejaya). She gives him a job in her office and also gives him a cottage to live in. Surya’s neighbour, Vaani (Anusmriti Sarkar), also loves Surya. Seeing the sticky situation, Surya’s friend asks him to get out of it. But before he can do so, he is diagnosed with stomach cancer. Maya and Vaani individually arrange for the Rs. 18 lakh needed for his surgery. Maya’s ex-husband, Mayapati (Govind Namdev), also arranges for Rs. 18 lakh. Why does Mayapati arrange for the money to save Surya’s life? Is Surya saved?

Rajan Lyallpuri has written a story which is not at all interesting. Even his screenplay is so silly that it just doesn’t make for engaging viewing. The very convenient drama unfolds without involving the audience at all. Why Mayapati and one more person would help a stranger, that too, with Rs. 18 lakh, is not clear. Lyallpuri’s dialogues are dull.

Janmejaya neither has the looks of a hero nor the talent. He is dull as Surya. Rituparna Sengupta is okay as Maya. Anusmriti Sarkar is so-so as Vaani. Govind Namdev does a fine job in the role of Mayapati. Tinaa Ghai lends fair support as Aarti. Anup Jalota is alright as chief minister Raghuvar Das. Rajpal Yadav is okay as peon Sambandhilal. Mushtaq Khan (as PA to the chief minister), Aroon Bakshi (as Dr. Rastogi), Anil Nagrath (as Babulal), Zakir Hussain, Surendra Pal and Ritesh Mobh are adequate.

Rajan Lyallpuri’s direction is poor. Bappi Lahiri’s music is nothing to shout about. Rajan Lyallpuri’s lyrics are ordinary. Bappa Lahiri’s background music is average. Anil Dhanda’s camerawork is functional. Pradeep Singh’s art direction is so-so. Ashok Srivastava’s editing is loose.

On the whole, Hum Tumhein Chahte Hain will face rejection by the public as it has almost zero entertainment value.
