KERALA POLITICIAN RESIGNS AFTER ACTRESS’ ACCUSATIONS | 22 August, 2025

Congress MLA Rahul Mamkootathil resigned as Youth Congress’ Kerala unit president on August 21 amid allegations of misconduct against women, including by an actress and a writer.

Actress Rini Ann George (in picture above) alleged on August 20 that a “young leader of a prominent political party” sent her obscene messages and invited her to a five-star hotel. Although the actress did not name the politician, social media and television channels aired purported screenshots and voice clips allegedly linking Mamkootathil to the actress’ claims. Writer Honey Bhaskaran alleged on social media that the legislator made derogatory remarks after chatting with her on Instagram. A Malayalam TV channel yesterday (21st) aired an audio clip alleging that Rahul forced a woman to terminate a pregnancy.

The MLA said that the claims lacked proof. He added that his decision to quit was voluntary and had not been demanded by senior party functionaries. “I don’t believe, the person Rini mentioned was me,” he said, adding, “She is my good friend and will remain so. I believe, I have not done anything against the law. If there is anything illegal, a complaint should be filed. I am ready to face action if found guilty.”

Rini said on August 21 that her intent was “behavioural correction among politicians”. She added that she had blocked the politician on social media. “Parties should take corrective measures against such people,” she elaborated.
