Just the mention of Dharmendra’s name by director Rajkumar Santoshi at the launch of the trailer of his Batwara 1947 today (28th July) at PVR Juhu in Bombay was enough to make Sunny Deol cry on the stage. At first, Sunny tried to fight back his tears but when it was impossible to do so, the rough-and-tough hero just let the tears flow.
Santoshi mentioned that Sunny’s dad (Dharam ji) had heard the script of Batwara 1947 and had loved it. That did it! Sunny simply could not control his tears. In fact, there were around four or five occasions when Sunny teared up. It seems, the very mention of Dharmendra’s name triggered such memories of his late father in Sunny’s mind that he kept wiping his tears again and again. At one point, he struggled to get hold of his handkerchief from his pocket, but soon realised that he wasn’t carrying a ‘kerchief! In the age of paper tissues, it is common for people to not carry a handkerchief in their pocket.
Not many among the invitees at the trailer launch realised that Sunny’s son and Dharmendra’s grandson, Karan Deol, who also plays an important role in the film, successfully fought back tears even while his dad was shedding them. Karan’s eyes glittered with tears when Rajkumar Santoshi made a mention of late Dharmendra.
Sunny also cried when, in response to a question from a media person about how Karan felt while acting with his dad, the youngster said, “For me, just standing in front of dad was enough.” Sunny was visibly so moved with Karan’s sincere and straight-from-the-heart reply that his tear ducts were activated once again.
