Columbia Pictures, Constantin Film, Davis Films, Vertigo Entertainment and PlayStation Productions’ Resident Evil (dubbed from the Hollywood film of the same name; A) is a horror drama. Bryan (Austin Abrams), a medical courier, is in the process of making an emergency delivery to Raccoon City General Hospital when an outbreak forces him to fight for survival. Does he succeed in delivering the parcel? Is he able to survive and return safely?
Zach Cregger and Shay Hatten have written a story which moves on a single track. The viral outbreak in Raccoon City goes on for what seems to be eternity. In a way, therefore, the duo’s screenplay seems to be never-ending as effects of the viral outbreak get more and more horrific. Some of the horror scenes send chills down the spines of the viewers. But there are other scenes which are visually so graphic that besides scaring the viewers, they also repulse them.
Austin Abrams does well as medical courier Bryan. Zach Cherry (as Umbrella scientist Dave), Kali Reis (as Umbrella enforcer Maxine), Paul Walter Hauser (as Umbrella scientist Carl), Johnno Wilson (as the county sheriff officer), Will Merrick (as Dave), Andrea Miltner (as the pedestrian), Karel Dobry (as the farmer), Zoé Bellas (as Birdie), Chris Lew Kum Hoi (as Stanley), Griffin Newman (as Wade), Jo Martin (as Andrea Vasquez), Emily Piggford (as Dr. Maria Stokes), Isla McRae (as the RV girl), James Beaumont (as the surgeon), Shaun W. Loeser (as the guy who pukes), Magdalena Šittová (as Agatha), Alice Sramková (as the fleeing woman), Jan Carlo Petrina (as the fast food worker), Tomáš Zonyga (as the rooftop runner), and the others do as desired.
Zach Cregger’s direction is good. Background music (by Hays Holladay and Ryan Holladay) is impactful. Dariusz Wolski’s cinematography is wonderful. Tom Hammock’s production designing is of a nice standard. Joe Murphy’s editing needed to be sharper. Dubbing is appropriate.
On the whole, Resident Evil has so much of horror and gore that it gets on the audience’s nerves after a point of time. It will, therefore, not do much at the box-office.
