SINGER GETS BAIL IN ZUBEEN GARG CASE | 13 October, 2026

Assamese film singer Amritprava Mahanta, in jail for 371 days over claims that she gave music icon Zubeen Garg alcohol against medical advice the night before he died in September 2025 in Singapore, has become the first person in the case to be granted bail from the Guwahati high court. In its bail order on October 9, the court said, it was unable to find prima facie case against her with regard to the alleged plot.

The high court remarked, “It would be a travesty of justice to deny her bail” given the progress of the case. “The court is unable to find a prima facie case against (Amritprava) with regard to the alleged offence of conspiracy and murder… The material (presented) so far is not even making out a prima facie case against (her),” the high court said in the order uploaded on October 12.

The order cites a discretionary provision applicable to women seeking bail under section 480(1) of the BNSS, corresponding to section 437(1) of the CrPC, as one of the grounds for ordering Amritprava’s release. Amritprava, who is one among seven persons arrested in the case of Zubeen Garg’s death and is the only one among the suspects to have been granted bail so far, was arrested on October 3 last year.
