Kannada film actor Sanchari Vijay, who met with a motorbike accident on 12th June in Bangalore, has suffered irreversible brain damage and was declared brain-dead by his doctors yesterday (14th June). In spite of brain surgery, the National Award-winning actor could not be revived. His family has decided to donate his organs. He is 38 years old.
Vijay was riding pillion with his friend when the motorcycle skidded and hit an electric pole. The actor was not wearing a helmet. While the friend fractured his leg, Vijay was grievously injured in the head.
Dr. Arun L. Naik, who is treating Sanchari Vijay, said in a statement yesterday evening, “Mr. Vijay’s apnea tests were performed at 12.25 p.m. and 7.50 p.m. today and are found to be positive. This means that there is irreversible complete damage to the brain and he is brain dead. The result has been conveyed to the family and the jurisdictional police for further processing. Jeevasarthakathe officials are here for all the procedures. Next step is the retrieval of organs and then transplant procedures to the recipients as per protocols which will happen at various hospitals including Apollo Hospitals. Mr. Vijay is currently stable and we are constantly monitoring his parameters.”
Earlier in the day, Dr. Naik had said, “Mr. Vijay is being treated in neuro ICU with all life support. His heart rate and blood pressure are stable. Neurologically, he is deeply unconscious and is showing signs of brain failure. The family has come forward and has consented for organ donation, keeping in view the current irreversible brain damage. We will continue to treat him with full life support and will follow the guidelines as per organ donation protocol. At this point of time, Mr. Vijay is in critical condition and we will extend all supportive care.”
Vijay was a popular theatre and film actor. Among the films he had acted in are Naanu Avanalla…Avalu, Killing Veerappan and Nathicharami.
