The music college which the Maharashtra government had proposed to set up on the Kalina campus of Bombay University, will be named after Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar. A decision in this regard was taken in the state cabinet on 9th February. The higher and technical education department has been asked to submit a detailed proposal.
The decision was taken after the proposal was discussed by a committee set up under the chairmanship of Lata’s brother, Hridaynath Mangeshkar.
The Maharashtra government had in 2020, on the occasion of the veteran singer’s 91st birthday, announced that the state would start its first government music college in Bombay. A panel consisting of A.R. Rahman, Usha Mangeshkar, Zakir Hussain and other senior music composers was set up to suggest faculties and courses to be offered. At that time, the intention was to name the college after Lata’s father, Master Dinanath Mangeshkar. The Mangeshkar family now desires the college to be named after Lata who learnt music under her father.
