The tale of woes of the Carnival chain of multiplexes seems to be never-ending. After screening Ritesh Deshmukh’s blockbuster Marathi film, Ved, for five days, the chain had to discontinue it due to non-payment of distributor’s share.
As is common knowledge, Carnival owed a lot of money to August Entertainment, distributors of Ved, for films distributed by the company earlier. After a lot of back and forth, August Entertainment agreed to let Carnival screen Ved in its properties from the 9 p.m. show on Friday, December 30, 2022. Point to be noted is that the film was not screened in the earlier shows on the day of release (December 30) because of the overdue amount. The KDMs were issued only after Carnival cleared the old dues of the last two years.
Sensing that the chain would default again, the distributors of Ved issued the KDMs for all cinemas of Carnival only for Friday night and the next four days, till Tuesday (January 3, 2023). When the multiplex chain failed to honour its commitment to remit the distributor’s share of Ved for the first weekend, till Tuesday evening, August Entertainment did not issue further KDMs. Consequently, the super-hit film had to be pulled out of all Carnival properties from the night shows of 3rd January, 2023.
