Raaj Kamal Films International and Sony Pictures International Productions’ Amaran (dubbed from the Tamil film of the same name; UA) is based on the true-life story of Major Mukund Varadarajan (Sivakarthikeyan), a commissioned officer in the Indian Army’s Rajput regiment. He was posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra for his valour exhibited in a counter-terrorism operation while on deputation to the 44th Rashtriya Rifles battalion in Jammu & Kashmir. The film also talks of the immense love between Varadarajan and his wife, Indhu (Sai Pallavi).
It is based on India’s Most Fearless: True Stories Of Modern Military Heroes by Shiv Aroor and Rahul Singh. Rajkumar Periasamy has written an interesting story which has romance, drama, action, emotions and melodrama. The screenplay, penned by Rajkumar Periasamy and Stefan Richter, is fast-paced and keeps the viewers engaged throughout. The drama entertains the audience. Dialogues are good.
Sivakarthikeyan performs ably as Major Mukund Varadarajan. Sai Pallavi shines in the role of Indhu. Bhuvan Arora makes his mark as sepoy Vikram Singh. Rahul Bose shines as Col. Amit Singh Dabas. Suresh Chakravarthy, Lallu (as sepoy Ravi Shankar), Shreekumar (as sepoy Michael), Shyam Mohan (as Indhu’s brother), Geetha Kailasam (as Mukund’s mother), Umair Ibn Lateef (as sepoy Waheed Ahmed), Ajay Naga Raaman (as sepoy Rajesh Shukla), Mir Salman (as sepoy Saifudeen), Gaurav Venkatesh (as sepoy Venkanna), Abhinav Raj (as Major Srinath), John Kaipallil (as Major Mithun Mohan), Paul T. Baby (as Indhu’s brother), Shyamaprasad Rajagopal (as Indhu’s father), Sugamya Sankar (as Mukund’s sister, Nithya), Navya Sujji (as Mukund’s sister, Swetha), Rohan Surya Kanuma Reddy (as sepoy Narasimha Rao), Shyrush Zutshi (as Altaf Baba), Vikas Bangar (as sepoy Jyoti Sharma), Anbu Thasan and Roman Shawl provide decent support.
Rajkumar Periasamy’s direction is very nice. G.V. Prakash Kumar’s music is fair. Lyrics are okay. Background music is effective. C.H. Sai’s camerawork is beautiful. Anbariv’s action and stunt scenes are thrilling. Rajeevan’s production designing is proper. R. Kalaivanan’s editing is very crisp. Dubbing is of a fine standard.
On the whole, Amaran is an entertainer and will be liked by the audience, but it will not be able to realise its box-office potential as it will find it difficult to withstand the opposition of the other two films — Singham Again and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 — released this week. Awareness about this film is low.
Released on 31-10-’24 at Glamour (3 shows; in daily 4 shows from 1-11-’24) and other cinemas of Bombay thru PEN Marudhar Cine Entertainment. Publicity: poor. Opening: weak. …….Also released all over. Opening was below the mark everywhere except in predominantly Tamil-speaking areas where the opening was slightly better.
