Bengali film actress Arpita Mukherjee and politician Partha Chatterjee were remanded to judicial custody for another 14 days by a PMLA special court in Calcutta on September 14. The two are accused by the Enforcement Directorate in the teacher recruitment scam. Both of them broke down during the virtual court hearing when the judgement was pronounced.
Earlier, Rs. 5.32 crore in cash were recovered from five bank accounts — three in the name of Arpita, and two in the names of companies in which she is a director. This is in addition to the Rs. 50 crore cash recovered from her residences earlier. Arpita is said to be the aide of Partha who was the former West Bengal education minister and the Trinamool Congress secretary general.
