DC Studios and The Safran Company’s Blue Beetle (dubbed from the Hollywood film of the same name; UA) is a superhero film based on the DC Comics character Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle.
Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña) graduates from college and returns to his hometown, Palmera City. One day, he is chosen to become a symbiotic host to the Scarab, an ancient alien biotechnological relic. That grants him a powerful armour which turns him into a superhero.
Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer has written a story and screenplay, which are fairly engaging. The drama has the usual twists and turns but many of them lack novelty.
Xolo Maridueña does well in the role of Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle. Adriana Barraza is alright as Jaime’s grandmother. Damián Alcázar stands his own as Jaime’s father. Bruna Marquezine leaves a mark as Jenny Kord. Susan Sarandon lends able support as Victoria Kord. Raoul Max Trujillo has his moments in the role of Conrad Carapax. George Lopez is alright as Jaime’s uncle. Elpidia Carrillo (as Jaime’s mother), Belissa Escobedo (as Jaime’s younger sister), Harvey Guillén (as Dr. Sanchez) and Becky G. (as voice of Khaji-Da) are adequate.
Ángel Manuel Soto’s direction is fairly nice. Bobby Krlic’s background music is effective. Pawel Pogorzelski’s cinematography is quite nice. Craig Alpert’s editing is fairly sharp. Dubbing is proper.
On the whole, Blue Beetle is an ordinary fare.
