Before the coronavirus pandemic lockdown, Amitabh Bachchan, Emraan Hashmi, Rhea Chakraborty and Krystal D’Souza starrer Chehre was ready for release. Producer Anand Pandit had even announced the film’s release date as April 24 this year, but the cinema closure poured water on his plans like it did on the plans of the whole world.

Of late, there have been rumours in the media that Pandit had decided to premiere the film on an OTT platform and had, therefore, sold the streaming rights to Disney+ Hotstar. However, the fact is that before the lockdown, the streaming rights of the Rumy Jafry directorial venture had been sold to Amazon Prime Video. Of course, the digital rights were executable after the exclusive eight-week theatrical window. But if the digital rights were with one OTT platform (Amazon Prime), how could the premiere OTT rights be with another platform (Disney+ Hotstar)? Information clarified with the eternally-young-looking Anand Pandit on the occasion of his birthday today (December 21) and he was more than happy to clear the air about the film which has Bachchan as a producing partner with him. Admitting that the digital rights of Chehre were held by Amazon Prime, he denied that any deal with Disney+ Hotstar had been finalised for the same film. The birthday boy added, “To respect the efforts of everyone associated with the film, it is my keenest desire to release the film on the big screen only. Delaying the film till normalcy returns would, of course, entail a loss of some crores by way of interest on the investment but I’m not at all thinking of that. I don’t mind losing some money on interest but if I can, I would want to release Chehre in the cinemas only.”

May his tribe increase!
