DEEPFAKES: GOVERNMENT WARNS COMPANIES OF SUSPENSION | 25 November, 2023

The Centre has warned social media companies that their platforms could be temporarily suspended/blocked if they don’t tackle the menace of deepfakes. The companies have been advised to devise methods to issue pop-ups, much like cautionary advice, detailing a ‘no go list’ for subscribers once they log into their accounts.

The warning comes in the wake of deepfake videos of actresses Rashmika Mandana and Katrina Kaif, which went viral on social media recently. Top ministers had in the last two days met representatives from companies like Meta (which runs Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp), Google (search engine and YouTube), X (previously Twitter) and Snapchat to seek their opinions on how best the problem could be checked.
