Two FIRs were registered against actor and BJP MP Mithun Chakraborty for allegedly making a provocative speech on October 27 in Bengal. The “cut-and-bury-them” speech was made at a BJP event in North 24 Parganas where Mithun said that the BJP would emerge victorious in the 2026 assembly elections in Bengal, and urged party workers to resist voter intimidation.
Although the star-MP did not name anyone in the speech, his remarks appeared to be directed towards TMC lawmaker Humayun Kabir, who had controversially threatened certain groups with being drowned in the Bhagirathi. In his speech, Mithun said, “A day will come when we will cut you and throw you not in the Bhagirathi… Bhagirathi is our mother, our holy mother. We will bury you in your own land there.”
The BJP has dubbed the FIRs as being politically motivated. It may be mentioned here that an FIR had been filed against Mithun Chakraborty in 2021 for allegedly inciting poll violence during the West Bengal elections. The Calcutta high court had later quashed the case, ruling that the dialogues in his speech were “fundamentally funny, hilarious and entertaining and didn’t constitute hate speech”.
