The Bombay high court on July 24 issued notices to two alleged conmen who posed as CBI officers and duped filmmaker Rakesh Roshan, on his plea seeking the return of Rs. 20 lakh of the total Rs. 50 lakh he had paid the duo. The CBI had arrested the two, Ashwini Kumar Sharma and Rajesh Ranjan, in 2011 for allegedly cheating more than 200 people including film personalities and businessmen, since 2006, posing as CBI officers.
The duo approached Rakesh Roshan, claiming that they were CBI officers and they offered to settle a civil matter he was embroiled in. The filmmaker paid them Rs. 50 lakh. He approached the CBI’s anti-corruption wing when his matter was not resolved, as per his plea. The two were later released on bail.
A 2012 order passed by the sessions court stated that Roshan had received Rs. 30 lakh of the Rs. 50 lakh, his plea stated. The trial court had permitted Roshan to withdraw the Rs. 30 lakh, pending trial against the two. Rakesh Roshan later moved the HC.
