Viacom18 Studios, Dharma Productions and Mentor Disciple Films’ Govinda Naam Mera is a suspense thriller.

Govind a.k.a. Govinda Waghmare (Vicky Kaushal) lives with his wife, Gauri (Bhumi Pednekar), in a bungalow which is the subject matter of a court case. While Govind claims, the bungalow was inherited by his mother, Asha Waghmare (Renuka Shahane) after his father’s demise, his step-brother, Vishnu Vishwakarma (Akshay Gunawat), stakes his claim on the bungalow because he says, his mother, Charulata (Veenah Nair), was their father’s legally wedded wife.

Govind and Gauri are always at loggerheads. Although Govind is an assistant choreographer in Bollywood, he likes to call himself a choreographer. He is in a relationship with Suku (Kiara Advani), a co-dancer. Govind and Suku want to get married but Suku insists that Govind divorce Gauri before that. Govind and Suku are hired to direct a music video for drug dealer Ajit Dharker’s (Sayaji Shinde) good-for-nothing son, Sandeep alias Sandy (Jeeva).

One day, Gauri is found murdered in her own house. What happens thereafter? Who is the murderer? Whom does the court give the disputed bungalow to? Do Govind and Suku get married and live happily ever after?

Shashank Khaitan has written a good story and screenplay with so many different tracks. Although the drama at times looks a bit too convenient, the overall writing is quite nice. The suspense track is particularly interesting, and the revelation of the suspense is truly nice. If the dramatic, courtroom and family drama scenes are entertaining, so are the light scenes, especially in the first half. The bickerings between Govind and Gauri are very funny. Equally funny are the tracks of maid Manju and of Ajit and Sandy Dharker. Shashank Khaitan’s dialogues are full of fun.

Vicky Kaushal does a wonderful job of Govind Waghmare. He shines in all kinds of scenes and plays the character with complete conviction. Bhumi Pednekar is fantastic as Gauri. Her performance is totally natural. Kiara Advani looks beautiful and plays Suku with all the conviction at her command. Her opportunistic trait is enjoyable. Renuka Shahane springs a complete surprise with a fantastic performance as Asha Waghmare. Amey Wagh lends phenomenal support as Govind’s lawyer, Kaustubh Godbole. Sayaji Shinde is pretty entertaining as the loud and self-centred Ajit Dharker. Jeeva stands his own and entertains thoroughly as Sandeep alias Sandy Dharker. Viraj Ghelani has his moments as insurance agent Baldev Chaddha. Trupti Khamkar provides extraordinary support as maid Manju. Her acting is superb. Dayanand Shetty leaves a fine mark as police inspector Javed. Akshay Gunawat is adequate as Vishnu Vishwakarma. Veenah Nair is nice as Charulata. Aseem Hattangadi makes his presence amply felt in the role of advocate Bhide. Shashank Khaitan is pretty impressive as the builder. Girish Oak has his moments as the ACP. Ranbir Kapoor (as himself) gets a smile to the viewers’ faces in a cameo appearance. Atul Kale (as the government lawyer), Kenneth Desai (as the judge), Ajitesh (as the taxi driver), Radhika Joshi (as Shinde maasi), Wilson Tiger (as Gopi Vishwakarma) and the others lend lovely support.

Shashank Khaitan’s direction is natural. His narrative style is easy-going and matches his script beautifully. Music (Sachin-Jigar, Tanishk Bagchi, Meet Bros., B. Praak and Rochak Kohli) is entertaining. The ‘Bijli’ song is the best, followed by ‘Kya baat’. Lyrics (Vayu, Kumaar, Jaani, Tanishk Bagchi and Gurpreet Saini) are in synch with the mood of the film. Choreography of the ‘Bijli’ (Ganesh Acharya) and the ‘Kya baat’ (Tushar Kalia) songs are eye-filling. John Stewart Eduri’s background music is quite nice. Vidushi Tiwari’s cinematography is of a fine standard. Production designing (by Amit Ray and Subrata Chakraborty) is appropriate. Charu Shree Roy’s editing is sharp.

On the whole, Govinda Naam Mera is an entertaining fare which can be enjoyed with the family.
