Indian filmmaker Kranti Kanade’s Marathi film, Peepal Tree, has been nominated for the best political film award instituted by the Political Film Society in Hollywood. The PFS was formed in 1986 to honour outstanding films on social issues. The categories of nomination include the best film on democracy, exposé, human rights and peace.
The earlier recipients of the award include Oscar-winning Argo, The Hurt Locker, Roman Polanski’s The Ghost Writer, and Steven Spielberg’s Munich.
Peepal Tree is a dramatic fiction film which exposes the institutional apathy towards urban tree killings. It is the story of a family which tries to protect trees with the help of a famed tree activist. It is slated to release in Maharashtra next week.
