Years in Bollywood are remembered by the hits, and stars live by the years in which their films have performed fantastically. Rest is generally forgotten. By this token, Shahid Kapoor has many years to forget as almost a decade rolled by without the star delivering a blockbuster. He muddled about from flops like Rangoon to middling performers like Kaminey and Udta Punjab, which were not emphatically either successful or flops.

But this year, finally, oh after so long, finally, Shahid has a bona fide hit. His Kabir Singh took off like a sprinter chasing a world record. From nowhere, it just shot to over Rs. 200 crore and ended up a little short of the Rs. 300-crore mark, giving Shahid his biggest solo hit ever. It also rescued his career from doldrums. Sure, he had starred in Padmaavat which was a blockbuster but the credit went to Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone…

Finally, Kabir Singh has come along in 2019, for which Shahid can take solo credit for a blockbuster. It’s not been a happy journey for Shahid over the last so many years, and a torturous journey for his producers but 2019 has reinvigorated his career. If only he displays better taste in his choice of films, it would be great to welcome another Shahid blockbuster in 2020.
