Failed actor and self-styled film critic Kamaal R. Khan was arrested by the Malad (Bombay) police on August 30 for his derogatory tweets posted in 2020. Shiv Sena member Rahul Kanal had complained that KRK operated two Twitter handles, which he frequently used for posting distasteful tweets about stars and celebrities. A lookout circular had been issued against the actor-critic as he was not in Bombay then.
As soon as he landed at the airport late on the night of August 29, the police was informed and KRK was detained. He was produced before a Borivli (Bombay) magistrate court on August 30. In the remand application, the police said, they wanted to probe his intentions behind such tweets and if he was doing it under instructions from someone. They also wanted to probe if KRK was demanding money from people in the film industry against threats of posting negative film reviews on social media.
In October 2020, Kanal, who runs a social organisation, complained about Kamaal’s tweets on Akshay Kumar’s Laxmii. According to Kanal, the tweets were aimed at spreading hatred and creating enmity between communities. The complaint also mentioned a distasteful tweet which KRK had posted against filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma. Subsequently, the Malad police registered an FIR against Kamaal R. Khan for defamation under provisions of the IPC and Information Technology Act. Since KRK was in Dubai, a lookout circular was issued against him.
