‘AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER’ WRITES BOX-OFFICE HISTORY

This week’s CIRKUS took a disastrous initial. The comedy reportedly netted just Rs. 6.50 crore on the first day. The film has turned out to be a major debacle.

Avatar: The Way Of Water (dubbed and original English versions) has done tremendously well in the first week. Collections in the national multiplex chains were far better than in stand-alone multiplexes and single-screen cinemas. The 3D version performed better than the 2D version. All the versions put together netted Rs. 40 crore on the first day. Collections remained at the same level on Saturday (Rs. 40 crore) but jumped 17.5% on Sunday which, therefore, closed at Rs. 47 crore. After a weekend of Rs. 127 crore, collections during the weekdays were also very good: Monday – Rs. 16.50 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 14.50 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 12.75 crore, Thursday – Rs. 12.15 crore. With the total for the weekdays being Rs. 55.90 crore, the first week closed at an extraordinary Rs. 182.90 crore.

Drishyam 2 continued to score in its fifth week in spite of new oppositions. It netted Rs. 1.07 crore on the first day of the fifth weekend. Collections on Saturday and Sunday were Rs. 2.02 crore and Rs. 2.56 crore respectively. After a total of Rs. 5.65 crore in the fifth weekend, collections during the weekdays were as follows: Monday – Rs. 0.88 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 0.84 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 0.83 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.79 crore. Therefore, the total for the weekdays was Rs. 3.34 crore. Total for 5th week: Rs. 8.99 crore. Grand total for 5 weeks: Rs. 224.68 crore.
