DULL ‘LIGER’ OPENING SHOCKS TRADE

The weak initial of Liger this week (on Thursday, August 25 in the night shows in multiplexes, and again on Friday, August 26 in regular shows in multiplexes and single-screen cinemas) sent shock waves in the trade. Firstly, the logic behind releasing the Hindi version of the Hindi-Telugu bilingual film in the night shows on Thursday, that too, only in multiplexes, was unfathomable. As if that weren’t bad enough, the producers released the Telugu and the Tamil dubbed version in all the non-Southern circuits on Thursday in regular shows! The dull collections on Thursday (Rs. 1.25 crore) and again on Friday (Rs. 4.25 crore) matched the poor public reports. Yet another flop!

Dobaaraa proved a box-office dud. It netted extremely poor collections in the first week. The film collected only Rs. 2 crore in the first weekend. The already pathetic collections dropped even further during the weekdays so that the total for the four weekdays was just Rs. 0.90 crore. Total for 1st week: Rs. 2.90 crore.

Laal Singh Chaddha crashed further in the second week. It netted around Rs. 4 crore in the second weekend, and another Rs. 1.75 crore during the weekdays. Total for 2nd week: Rs. 5.75 crore. Grand total for 2 weeks: Rs. 57.15 crore.

Raksha Bandhan also crashed further in the second week. After collecting around Rs. 3 crore in the second weekend, it added another Rs. 1.50 crore during the weekdays. In this way, its total for 2nd week was only Rs. 4.50 crore. Grand total for 2 weeks: Rs. 43.25 crore.

Karthikeya 2 (dubbed) was super-strong in the second week too. It netted in 2nd week more than double of what it netted in 1st week. The second weekend started with a take of Rs. 2.46 crore on Friday. Collections on Saturday shot up to Rs. 3.04 crore and further to Rs. 4.07 crore on Sunday. In this way, the second weekend closed at Rs. 9.57 crore. Collections for the weekdays were as follows: Monday – Rs. 0.98 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 1.15 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 0.95 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.89 crore. With the total for the weekdays being Rs. 3.97 crore, the second week closed at Rs. 13.54 crore. Grand total for 2 weeks: Rs. 19.29 crore. Super-hit!

Dagadi Chawl 2 (Marathi) did well in the first week all over Maharashtra.

Takatak 2 (Marathi) did fairly good business in the first week in Maharashtra.

De Dhakka 2 (Marathi) continued its victory march in Maharashtra in 3rd week too.

Fakt Mahilao Maate (Gujarati) swept the box-office in the first week all over Guajarat and Saurashtra. It reaped the benefit of the Janmashtami holiday on its first day (August 12). Extremely positive word of mouth saw collections maintaining quite well during the weekdays after a phenomenal and record-breaking first weekend. The film opened at a record Rs. 1.34 crore on Friday from a total of 300 properties (1,300 shows daily). Collections increased to Rs. 1.51 crore on Saturday, and further to Rs. 1.81 crore on Sunday. In this way, the film netted Rs. 4.66 crore in the first weekend, breaking records on each of the three days and, therefore, in the first weekend too. Collections for the weekdays: Monday – Rs. 0.52 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 0.49 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 0.48 crore, Thursday – Rs. 0.42 crore. Therefore, the total for the weekdays was an impressive Rs. 1.91 crore. In this way, the total for the first week was a record-breaking Rs. 6.57 crore!
