‘CIRKUS’ BOMBS, ‘AVATAR’ SEQUEL RULES

Cirkus has bombed miserably. Looking to the first week’s collections, it seems certain that the film, inspired by The Comedy Of Errors, will turn out to be a tragedy of errors in scripting. The start itself was poor, and collections went from bad to worse during the weekdays. It netted Rs. 6 crore on the opening day. Collections on Saturday dropped a little so that the day closed at Rs. 5.75 crore. After a spurt in collections on Sunday to Rs. 8 crore, the first weekend closed at a pathetic Rs. 19.75 crore. Collections for the weekdays were as follows: Monday – Rs. 2.20 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 1.90 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 1.60 crore, Thursday – Rs. 1.40 crore. In this way, the total for the weekdays was Rs. 7.10 crore. Total for 1st week: Rs. 26.85 crore. In spite of no major opposition this week and in the next three weeks, it seems unlikely that the film’s lifetime total will touch Rs. 45 crore.

Anokhi proved to be a disaster in the first week all over.

Big Dhamaka! (dubbed) bombed all over in 1st week.

Avatar: The Way Of Water (dubbed and original English versions) continued to be super-strong in the national multiplex chains. It netted almost Rs. 100 crore in 2nd week! The second weekend started with a take of Rs. 12.01 crore. Collections on Saturday shot up to Rs. 20.16 crore. The total for Sunday was Rs. 25 crore. Therefore, the second weekend closed at an unbelievable Rs. 57.17 crore! The film maintained its sway over the audience in the weekdays too by collecting: Monday – Rs. 12.80 crore, Tuesday – Rs. 10 crore, Wednesday – Rs. 9.55 crore, Thursday – Rs. 8.97 crore. With the total for the weekdays being a handsome Rs. 41.32 crore, the second week closed at Rs. 98.49 crore!! Grand total for 2 weeks: Rs. 281.39 crore. It will cross the Rs. 300-crore mark before the third weekend itself. The Avatar sequel seems poised to cross the Rs. 350-crore mark and probably join the Rs. 400-crore club in India. If that happens, it will become the highest grossing Hollywood film ever, as predicted by Information in its review. To quote from our review: “On the whole, Avatar: The Way Of Water is a blockbuster. It could prove to be Hollywood’s biggest grosser in India so far. It will also be among the top Hindi grossers of all time.”

Drishyam 2 dropped only 33% in 6th week as compared to the previous (5th) week. It netted Rs. 3.26 crore during the sixth weekend, and another Rs. 2.76 crore during the weekdays, taking its total for 6th week to Rs. 6.02 crore. Grand total for 6 weeks: Rs. 230.70 crore!!
