NATIONAL AWARD-WINNING FILMMAKER TARUN MAZUMDAR DEPARTS | 5 July, 2022

Iconic Bengali filmmaker Tarun Mazumdar passed away in Calcutta on 4th July in Calcutta at the SSKM Hospital due to renal failure and heart attack. He was 91 years old and had won the National Award four times. In fact, his Ganadevata (1979) was the first Bengali film ever to get the National Award for the best popular film providing wholesome entertainment. He was also decorated with the Padma Shri in 1990.

He donated his body to the SSKM Hospital for purposes of medical education.

Tarun Mazumdar was born in Bangladesh in 1931. He moved to Calcutta to complete his graduation. Among the well-known Bengali films he made are Alor Pipasa, Balika Badhu, Kancher Swarga, Palatak, Nimantran, Kuheli, Sriman Prithviraj, Thagini, Fuleswari, Sansar Simante, Ganadevata, Dadar Kirti, Bhalobasa Bhalobasa, Alo, Bhalobasar Onek Naam, Chander Bari, Apan Amar Apan and Bhalobashar Bari. He made his earlier films as a trio with Sachin Mukherji and Dilip Mukherji. The trio made films under the name of Yatrik (pronounced Jatrik in Bengali). Their first film was Chaowa Paowa, starring Uttam Kumar and Suchitra Sen. He remade Balika Badhu in Hindi too. The original Bengali version was a super-hit but the Hindi adaptation was not as big.

His ex-wife, Sandhya Roy, starred in 20 of his films. Tarun Mazumdar had introduced Moushumi Chatterjee, Mahua Roychoudhury, Ayan Banerjee and Tapas Paul.
