NON-BAILABLE WARRANT AGAINST FILMMAKER SHANKAR IN COPYRIGHT CASE | 31 January, 2021

The metropolitan magistrate court-II, Egmore, recently issued a non-bailable warrant against director Shankar for his repeated failure to appear before it in connection with a copyright case. Short story writer Arur Tamilnandan has alleged that Shankar’s Endhiran, starring Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Rai, was copied from his short story, Jiguba, published in a Tamil magazine in 1996 and re-published as a novel, Dhik Dhik Dheepika, in 2007. He has said that in 2010, after the release of Endhiran, he found that the story was copied from Jiguba.

The Supreme Court last year dismissed a petition of Shankar, challenging the order of the Madras high court in connection with a copyright violation case against him. After that, proceedings commenced in the metropolitan magistrate court-II, Egmore. However, neither Shankar nor his counsel appeared befoe the court which then issued a non-bailable warrant against the filmmaker. The matter has been adjourned to February 19.
