Digital audio-visual content, online films and digital news has been brought under the purview of the ministry of Information & Broadcasting. A notification to this effect was published in the gazette on 9th November. With this, online giants like Netflix, Disney+ Hotstar and Amazon Prime Video have been brought under the I & B ministry.
While some in the film and entertainment industry saw this as a curb on freedom of expression, there were others who opined that this may not have serious ramifications as bringing online video content and news under the umbrella of the I & B ministry did not mean censorship of content but it would definitely gladden the hearts of TV channels as like them, even online channels would now be regulated.
