The recovery of Rs. 21 crore cash from Bengali film actress Arpita Mukherjee’s residence was possible because the Enforcement Directorate found alleged benami property documents at Bengal cabinet minister Partha Chatterjee’s house registered in her name. The TMC minister had taken care not to keep cash with him but he was probably fearful of losing control of the valuable properties and had, therefore, kept details of the flats registered in Arpita’s name. The ED found details of at least eight properties in the actress’ name, which prima facie indicated that they were all benami assets acquired from proceeds of crime in the teachers’ recruitment scam.
Meanwhile, the ED on July 25 told the court that a black diary of the Bengal higher and school education department and a pocket book found at Arpita’s house could uncover foolproof details about the scam and connected money laundering.
