SHOCKING! IMPDA TO SHUT DOWN | 26 March, 2024

The Indian Motion Picture Distributors Association (IMPDA) is on the verge of closing down. A decision to this effect was taken by the executive committee on March 20. The topic was discussed earlier, on March 6, in the Association’s executive committee but the final resolution to keep the proposal for closure before the general house, was passed on March 20. Lack of interest of members, lack of new membership and also the diminishing sway which the Association holds over its members are said to be the chief reasons for the unusual decision to wind up the Association itself.

The executive committee will now have to convene an extraordinary general meeting to put the proposal of shut-down before the members of the Association. If passed, it will mark the end of the distributors’ association which was started in 1939. The 84-year-old IMPDA is a body of the distributors of Bombay circuit. All disputes between distributors and producers as well as between distributors and exhibitors are referred to either the IMPDA or the joint dispute settlement committee of the IMPDA and the producers’/exhibitors’ association/s. If the general house of the IMPDA also agrees to close down the Association, it would mean that distributors of Bombay would have to rush to the court everytime there is a dispute.
