‘SONGYA’ (MARATHI) REVIEW | 15 December, 2023

Nirami Films’ Songya (Marathi; UA) is the story of a bold girl who revolts against tradition.

Shubhra (Rutuja Bagwe) is a well-educated girl who doesn’t follow traditions blindly. One such tradition in her village is that every girl has to prove her virginity on the wedding night. Shubhra and Yashraj (Ajinkya Nanaware), son of local MLA Bhaurao (Ganesh Yadav), are in love and decide to marry. But Shubhra refuses to toe the line and give the virginity test. Due to this, the marriage is cancelled. What happens thereafter?

Deepak Yadav has written a story which is set in today’s times and hence the tradition of a girl proving her virginity on the wedding night looks out of place. The story, therefore, fails to appeal to the audience. His screenplay is also quite boring as the scenes don’t connect emotionally with the viewers. Deepak Yadav’s dialogues are dull.

Rutuja Bagwe acts ably as Shubhra. Ajinkya Nanaware is fair as Yashraj. Ganesh Yadav lends nice support as Yashraj’s father, Bhaurao. Anil Gawas is okay in the role of Shubhra’s father, Namdev. Dipali Jadhav is alright as Shubhra’s elder sister, Sarita. Yogesh Chikatgaonkar does an average job as Deva. Amol Bhosle lends ordinary support in the role of Shubhra’s brother, Sunil. Aparna Kakirde is unimpressive as Yashraj’s mother. Shraddha Dhamankar is ordinary as Shubhra’s younger sister, Shraddha. Vishakha Sapkale (as Yashraj’s sister, Krutika), Prasad Raorane (as Yashraj’s friend, Ganu), Pradeep Doiphode (as a member of the Panchayat), Ashish Shirke (as a member of the Panchayat) and the others provide the desired support.

Milind Inamdar’s direction is not up to the mark. Vijay Narayan Gavande’s music lacks hit songs. There are too many songs of which only two are fair. Guru Thakur’s lyrics are meaningful. Deepali Vichare’s choreography is dull. Background music is not very impactful. Arvind Kumar’s cinematography is ordinary. Vishal Pawar’s sets are nothing to dance about. Nilesh Gavand’s editing is loose.

On the whole, Songya is a flop show.

Released on 15-12-’23 at Glamour (daily 1 show) and other cinemas of Bombay thru Filmastra Studios. Publicity & opening: very weak.
