‘THE MARVELS’ (DUBBED) REVIEW | 10 November, 2023

Marvel Studios’ The Marvels (dubbed from the Hollywood film of the same name; UA) is yet another superhero film.

Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and has destroyed the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see her shouldering the burden of a destabilised universe. When she reaches an anomalous wormhole, her powers get entangled with two other superheroes to form the Marvels.

Based on Marvel Comics, the story and screenplay are written by Nia DaCosta, Megan McDonnell and Elissa Karasik. The drama is somewhat interesting but because it revolves around three ladies, its appeal among the Hindi film-going audience is limited. Also, the proceedings tend to get confusing at times.

Brie Larson does well as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel. Teyonah Parris is good in the role of Monica Rambeau. Iman Vellani is nice as Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel. Samuel L. Jackson lends good support as Nick Fury. Zawe Ashton is alright as Dar-Benn. Park Seo-joon is adequate as Prince Yan. Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur and Saagar Shaikh lend decent support in the roles of Kamala’s mother, father and older brother respectively. Lashana Lynch (as Maria Rambeau), Randall Park (as FBI agent Jimmy Woo), Daniel Ings (as Ty-Rone), Colin Stoneley (as Papp-Tonn), Gary Lewis (as Emperor Dro’ge), Shamier Anderson, Abraham Popoola, Ffion Jolly, Caroline Simonnet and Jessica Zhou are adequate.

Nia DaCosta’s direction is average. The film is boring in parts. Laura Karpman’s background music is effective. Sean Bobbitt’s cinematography is of a fine standard. Cara Brower’s production designing is good. Editing (Catrin Hedström and Evan Schiff) is quite crisp. Dubbing is proper.

On the whole, The Marvels is an unexciting fare for the Hindi film-going audience.
