VIR DAS BOOKED FOR ALLEGED VIOLATION OF COPYRIGHT | 8 November, 2022

The Cuffe Parade (Bombay) police on November 4 booked actor and stand-up comic Vir Das and three others for violation of copyright. Theatre producer Ashvin Gidwani, the complainant told the police that Vir had copied 12 jokes from the script of a previous show produced by him, and had included the same in his popular show streaming on an OTT platform. It may be pointed out that Gidwani and Das had worked together more than 10 years ago in a show. Vir Das had performed in that show at St. Andrew’s auditorium at Bandra in Bombay.

Gidwani told the police that in 2019, his company and Vir Das decided to sign a new contract to telecast the same show with minor changes on the OTT platform. He alleged that Vir went ahead with the concept and developed his own show out of it.

Ashvin Gidwani sent Vir a legal notice but the latter said, there was no copyright violation.
