Producer-director Sanjay Niranjan has accused Sony Music of unauthorisedly uploading the songs of his Kaho Na Kaho and International Hero on its (music company’s) YouTube channel. Niranjan has claimed that he had sold the film rights of both his films (but not the song rights of both his films) to Virgo Entertainment.
The legal notice sent by Sanjay Niranjan to Sony mentions that when he uploaded his own songs on his YouTube channel, he was shocked to receive a copyrights violation notice for the same from YouTube, stating that the songs belonged to Orchard Music, a sister concern of Sony Music. What’s more, YouTube terminated Niranjan’s YouTube channel on these grounds. In spite of furnishing proof to YouTube of his copyright over the songs of his films, the platform has not taken the same into consideration, adds the notice. The notice points out that Sony Music, too, has chosen to turn a blind eye and ear to the complaint, resulting in losses for Sanjay Niranjan of “about Rs. 10 crore”.
The legal notice asks Sony to forthwith withdraw the songs of his two films from its YouTube channel, and pay him compensation of Rs. 10 crore.
