The I & B ministry has discontinued the facility of priority screening (tatkal) for film certification with immediate effect. Applications already submitted under the Tatkal scheme will be processed, but no fresh applications will be accepted under the scheme henceforth. The amendment was notified recently under the Cinematograph (Certification) Amendment Rules, 2026.
All films will now be examined by the Central Board of Film Certification as per guidelines, in the regular course. This will ensure that all producers are treated equally by the CBFC.
How the discontinuation of the facility affects producers is to be seen. It may entail delays in film certification because producers had been facing difficulties in obtaining time slots for screenings even under the Tatkal scheme.
