Filmmakers Aparna Sen, Soumitra Chatterjee, Adoor Gopalakrishnan and Anurag Kashyap, and actor Naseeruddin Shah alongwith some MPs called for the release of activist Varavara Rao and others accused in the Elgar Parishad case. They appealed to the Maharashtra government to seek urgent medical attention for Rao who is 81 years old. More than 500 prominent personalities signed a statement calling for immediate bail for him.
Varavara Rao’s bail plea, filed on medical grounds in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, is pending before a special NIA court.
