The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has proposed a change in land use for the plot housing the defunct century-old Alexandra Theatre in Bombay and rezone it for residential use. According to the BMC, the cinema building is dilapidated, and running the cinema is not economically viable.
The cinema at Byculla stands on a plot admeasuring 1,005 sq. metres. The BMC will move a proposal today (August 12) before its improvements committee, seeking to remove the plot’s cinema/entertainment reservation and rezone it for residential use. The proposal says that an application for change of user was submitted by Sameer Qazi of the Maharashtra Waqf Board to deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde on February 25. The plot’s occupant, Rafiq Patel, also submitted an application to the civic development planning department.
