The Delhi high court on July 10 upheld the conviction of actor Rajpal Yadav in multiple cheque bouncing cases and sentenced him to three months’ imprisonment. The court affirmed the trial court’s judgement and refused to extend the benefit of probation in view of his conduct during the proceedings. Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma dismissed Yadav’s revision petitions and upheld the sentence awarded by the trial court under section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act. The court ordered Rajpal to pay over Rs. 1 crore to the complainant in each of the seven cases. Rajpal Yadav has already paid approximately Rs. 2.25 crore, and that shall be adjusted, the high court clarified.
The actor has been given two months’ time to appeal, during which time the sentence has been kept in abeyance. The high court also fined Rajpal Yadav’s wife, Radha, around Rs. 5.50 lakh in each case, payable to the complainant.
