The Supreme Court today (February 13) granted interim bail to filmmaker Vikram Bhatt’s wife, Shwetambari Bhatt, in the alleged Rs. 40-crore cheating case. She is lodged in the central jail in Udaipur. The apex court termed her arrest “unfortunate” and questioned why criminal proceedings were being used to recover dues.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi issued notice on a petition filed by the couple challenging the Rajasthan high court’s order denying them bail.
Dr. Ajay Murdia had filed a criminal case against the Bhatts for allegedly cheating him to the tune of Rs. 40 crore. He claimed that the couple took Rs. 40 crore for production of films but used the funds for personal expenditure.
Chief Justice Surya Kant observed, “Unfortunately, they (the Bhatts) have not sought quashing of the FIR.”
