MAMTA KULKARNI ASKS COURT TO STRIKE OUT HER NAME FROM DRUG CASE | 13 April, 2019

Mamta Kulkarni has approached the Bombay high court to strike down an FIR against her by the Thane police in 2016 in a Rs. 2,000-crore narcotics racket case. The Thane police had busted an international drug scam after they seized 18.5 tonnes of ephedrine worth over Rs. 2,000 crore from Solapur in April 2016. They had arrested 10 accused and named seven others, including Vicky Goswami and Mamta Kulkarni, as absconding accused. In her petition, the actress claimed that she was made a scapegoat and named in the chargesheet due to her acquaintance with prime accused and drug lord Vicky Goswami.

In the chargesheet, the police had named Mamta of hatching the conspiracy to transport the ephedrine powder from Solapur to Kenya for manufacturing methamphetamine out of it and supplying the contraband throughout the world. Mamta pleaded that there was no evidence against her in the chargesheet filed under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. She also said that in the grand jury charges filed before the US district court by the police, Vicky Goswami is named as key conspirator in the drug bust case but Mamta’s presence or role in the crime was not mentioned at all.
