SC REJECTS UPHAAR CINEMA FIRE VICTIMS’ PLEA | 22 February, 2020

The Supreme Court rejected a curative petition filed by an association of the victims of Uphaar cinema fire tragedy in Delhi, seeking enhancement of punishment to owners Sushil and Gopal Ansal. It found no fault in its verdict in the 1997 fire tragedy case.

The apex court in 2017 had let off Sushil Ansal with jail term already served by him, considering his advanced age-related complications. Gopal Ansal, however, was asked to serve the remaining one-year jail term. Both the brothers were directed to pay fines of Rs. 30 crore each.

While examining the curative plea of the Association For Victims Of Uphaar Tragedy, a bench of the apex court earlier this week found no merit in the plea and rejected the petition in in-chamber proceedings.

It may be recalled that 59 people had died in the Uphaar cinema fire tragedy in Delhi on 13th June, 1997.
