Music composer Vanraj Bhatia is in a terrible state of affairs. The 92-year-old music director lives like a recluse in his apartment at Nepean Sea Road in Bombay. He is bed-ridden and is in need of money to take care of himself. Except for a domestic help and neighbours, Bhatia has nobody to look after him.
The home he lives in is on rent. Monthly sums of money are donated by foundations and individuals to help the music composer carry on with his life. Vanraj Bhatia chose to remain unmarried throughout his life. His sister is married and lives with her family in Canada.
Among the films Bhatia had scored music for were Ankur, 36 Chowringhee Lane, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro and Bhumika. In all, he had composed music for nine films made by Shyam Benegal. He also branched out into TV later. His friends and admirers are now raising funds for Vanraj Bhatia.
