Vijaya Mulay, film historian and director of Doordarshan’s animation short, Ek Anek Aur Ekta, passed away at her resi­dence in South Delhi on the evening of 19th May. She was 98 and was the mother of actress Suhasini Mulay.

The seven-minute short film of Vijaya Mulay had the hit Ek chidiya anek chidiya song composed by Vasant Desai. The film fetched the National Award for best promotional film in the non-commercial category in 1974. It was produced by Bhim Sain.

Vijaya Mulay also won the National Award for the best writing on cinema for her work, ‘From Rajahs And Yogis To Gandhi And Beyond: Images Of India In International Films Of The Twentieth Century’.

Vijaya Mulay was the founder of the Patna Film Society and an important part of the Delhi Film Society. She became the president of the Federation of Film Societies of India (FFSI) after Satyajit Ray and Mrinal Sen. She was an educationist by profession, and had mentored a generation of filmmakers and film writers in India.
