The Bombay high court on July 22 struck down criminal proceedings against actress Mamta Kulkarni in connection with the drug trafficking case involving the seizure of ephedrine worth Rs. 2,000 crore in 2016.
A division bench of Justices Bharati Dangre and Manjusha Deshpande struck down the criminal case against Mamta who had, many years ago, shifted to Mombasa in Kenya with her husband. The bench said, there was no evidence against her.
On April 12, 2016, the anti-narcotics cell of the Thane police intercepted two cars and seized ephedrine worth Rs. 80 lakh. Both drivers were arrested. It emerged that the substance was procured from a factory in Solapur district. The factory, run by Avon Life Sciences Ltd., is purportedly controlled by Mamta’s husband, Vicky Goswami. Mamta was one of the directors in the company and owned 11 lakh shares of the company. Her name was, therefore, added to the list of accused against whom the chargesheet was filed.
