For those who feel, content on streaming platforms if often risqué, it should come as good news that 15 OTT platforms have jointly formulated a self-regulation code. Since web series and originals streamed on OTT platforms are not subjected to censorship like films, the platforms will henceforth have their own norms for ensuring that content does not agitate viewers. The platforms which have collaborated on the self-regulation code are Netflix, Amazon Prime Video,
Disney+ Hotstar, Zee5, Voot, ALTBalaji, Jio Cinema, Eros Now, Hungama and Shemaroo,
Although content creators will have the freedom of expression, the code lays down that there will be enough indication for viewers to understand if dialogues or violence or sex is/are an issue in a particular film or web series so that people can decide if they want to watch it or give it a miss.
The streaming platforms will also have to set up a consumer complaints department and/or an internal committee, and an advisory panel to deal with appeals and complaints. The code has been created by the Internet And Mobile Association of India (IAMAI).
