Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures’ Pokémon Detective Pikachu (dubbed from the Hollywood film of the same name; UA) is a fantasy mystery film that is live-action and animated.
Harry Goodman goes missing and so, his son, Tim (Justice Smith), decides to investigate. Harry’s former Pokémon partner, Detective Pikachu, helps Tim in solving the mystery.
Dan Hernandez, Benji Samit and Nicole Perlman have written a story which is interesting but only in parts. Their story is based on the original story by Tomokazu Ohara and Haruka Utsui. Screenplay, penned by Dan Hernandez, Benji Samit, Rob Letterman and Derek Connolly, is engaging at places but tends to get boring at some points.
Justice Smith is quite effective as Tim Goodman. Kathryn Newton is alright as Lucy Stevens. Bill Nighy lends fair support in the role of Howard Clifford. Ken Watanabe is quite good as Lieutenant Hide Yoshida. Others lend fair support.
Rob Letterman’s direction is alright. Henry Jackman’s background music is proper. John Mathieson’s camerawork is nice. Production designing (by Nigel Phelps) is appropriate. Editing (by Mark Sanger and James Thomas) is okay. Dubbing is good.
On the whole, Pokémon Detective Pikachu is an ordinary fare. The business of its original English version, also released simultaneously, will be better than that of the dubbed version.
