The dull opening of Bhediya today (November 25) has sent shock waves in the industry. The trade people are unable to understand the logic behind collections which range from the dismal to the average.
Has the initial been pathetic because hero Varun Dhawan has a line of non-successes to his credit in the last three or four years? Is it because of the title? Or is it due to the unprecedented craze of last week’s super-hit, Drishyam 2? Maybe, it is the combination of all the factors mentioned above.
The first trailer of Bhediya had met with a mixed response. While some among the public had found the trailer interesting, there were others who didn’t care much for it. Although the following may not have a bearing on the dull opening of Bhediya, it is pertinent to note the case of Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior and Street Dancer which were released in 2020, some weeks before the Coronavirus lockdown. Ajay Devgan’s Tanhaji opened on 10th January, 2020 and went on to become a blockbuster. Two weeks after it came Varun Dhawan’s Street Dancer which opened poorly and ultimately proved to be a resounding flop. Was it the runaway success of Tanhaji that was responsible for the dull start of Street Dancer?
Unlike in 2020, when there was a gap of two weeks between the release of Ajay’s Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior and Varun’s Street Dancer, the gap between the current releases of the two stars this month is just one week.
